Nearly 20,000 attendees entered the gates of Black Deer Festival last weekend for the first time since 2019. The “UK’s Best New Festival” fell victim to two Covid cancellations, despite only missing the government’s lift in restrictions by a matter of weeks in 2021. The three-day event welcomed to its stages some of the world’s most prolific performers, including Van Morrison, Wilco, James and The Waterboys indulging ticket holders with a long weekend of Americana, country, rock, folk, and blues music from around the globe. Further festival favourites on the 2022 line-up included Jake Bugg, Imelda May, Foy Vance, The Dead South, Courtney Marie Andrews, and Drive-By Truckers.
Local MP Nusrat Ghani congratulated the organisers on a ‘fantastic success’ writing: “I am delighted that following the disruption caused by the pandemic, it finally took place again this year, and put Wealden on the map for culture and art. Black Deer is a community, accessible to all and we are extremely lucky to have this unique celebration of Americana music and culture at our doorstep.”
Showcasing music of an independent spirit across multiple stages, exquisite live fire cooking from the UK’s best smokehouse chefs, layers of Americana-inspired lifestyle and custom motorcycle culture with Harley Davidson, Black Deer is a family staycation with a community ethos. Since making a name for itself in 2018 for its unique offering of laid-back Americana, it is the ultimate destination for barbeque foodies and young families, with an array of authentic vendors and children’s activities to keep them entertained all day long.
Despite the unprecedented weather conditions causing Saturday night’s headliners to end earlier than they had originally planned, the festival has been hailed by ticket holders and artists alike as one of the best festivals they have attended. Spirits were high across the weekend, with attendees taking to social media to praise the organisers for their resilience over the last couple of years.
